Kyle & Co · Category Compass

AI Interviewers: A Category Compass.

When this category was new, we benchmarked solutions instead of ranking them. We said the market wasn't ready to rank, on the record. Here's what we found.

Category Compass: AI Interviewers report cover
What it is

A benchmark, not a ranking.

The Category Compass is Kyle & Co's framework for evaluating HR tech categories that are too new, too volatile, or too buyer-dependent to rank fairly. Instead of telling you which vendor is best, it tells you what to look for — and why the differences between solutions matter more than a leaderboard.

The AI Interviewers edition was the first. It mapped the category's real capabilities, surfaced the gaps buyers weren't asking about, and gave HR teams a defensible framework for evaluation.

What we found
The category wasn't ready to rank.
Vendor capabilities varied too much, buyer use cases were too different, and the category was moving too fast for a static ranking to mean anything defensible.
Candidate experience is the blind spot.
Most buyers focus on efficiency. The risk that gets underweighted: what an AI interviewer does to your employer brand when it doesn't work the way candidates expect.
Your screening process is your brand.
The vendors who get this right treat the interaction design as seriously as the detection logic. Most don't.
Fraud detection is table stakes, not a differentiator.
Every vendor claims it. The real differentiation is in what happens after the signal — the workflow, the human review layer, the documentation.
The compass framework

How to use this research.

The report gives you four things to evaluate any AI interviewer — use them in vendor conversations, RFPs, and internal alignment discussions.

Capability mapping

What the solution actually does vs. what the marketing says. Broken down by detection, interaction design, integrations, and human oversight.

Buyer context

Why the right answer depends on your volume, your roles, your brand risk tolerance, and your existing stack. No single solution fits every context.

What to ask vendors

The questions most buyers aren't asking. Specifically on fraud handling workflows, candidate escalation paths, and bias audit documentation.

Red flags and green lights

Patterns we saw across the category that should accelerate or kill a procurement conversation before you get to a demo.
